DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
Under direction of the Dean of Student Services, the Counselor will provide personal, career, and educational counseling to the Veterans population at Butte College. They will be a member of the Counseling Faculty. The Veteran's Counselor may provide services in a variety of locations including the Counseling Center on the Main Campus, the Veteran's Resource Center (VRC), the Chico Center, the Glenn County Center, and online. Assignment will be determined by the Counseling Department Chair and Dean of Student Services and may be revised on a semester-by-semester basis in an effort to maximize support for student veterans. The Veterans Counselor will work closely with Counseling Faculty and the staff of the VRC. Established in Spring 2008, the VRC provides a central entry point for veterans and their families, as they navigate the civilian and academic worlds. During the 2014 year, the VRC office processed over 500 certifications for veterans and dependents. The VRC has been continually cited as a standout program for meeting the needs of veterans living in Butte and Glenn Counties returning to academia. In 2010, The Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges created a Veterans Resource Project establishing similar centers on twelve community college campuses, modeled after the VRC at Butte College.

POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position is also responsible for.

Providing academic, vocational and personal counseling to students on an individual basis.
Providing group counseling for the accomplishment of specific objectives.
Manage a Veteran's caseload, including proactive outreach and follow up
Assisting in the planning and implementation of registration.
Assisting students with petitions for graduation and to the Academic Council.
Establishing and maintaining communication with the various instructional divisions, the administration and the staff of the College.
Establishing and maintaining communications with the high schools served by the College.
Establishing and maintaining communications with community agencies that can serve the general student and Veterans populations.
Serving on various College committees.
Keeping current with developments and changes in the field.
Development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
Assist in the planning and implementation of student orientation and registration.
Develop Student Educational Plans.
Create appropriate multimedia resources, handouts and written materials for all educational related activities.
Monitor, track and compare progress of the current Veterans population in areas of persistence, comprehensive course completion, degree and certificate completion, and transfer.
Contributing to the determination of best practices to support students who are Veterans.

Representative Duties:
Non-classroom staff responsibilities represent a forty-hour week (199 days). The responsibilities of Counselors include but are not limited to the following:

Serving on various College committees.
Keeping current with developments and changes in his or her field.
It is understood that these responsibilities may require a minimum of five (5) hours off-campus per week at the professional discretion of the staff member with the approval of the Assistant Dean for Counseling and EOPS.
Development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
Professional Growth and Currency

Counselors are required to show examples of activities which demonstrate a pattern of academic, professional, and/or technical updating or currency.
Area or Departmental Responsibilities

Is knowledgeable about and abides by College policies and procedures. This includes the accurate and timely submission of all reports, grades and paper work.
Meets deadlines and time targets.
Orders instructional materials, equipment and textbooks with sufficient lead times.
Assists in scheduling.
Assists in course staffing functions.
Provides assistance and help to other full-time, part-time and/or new counselors.
Coordinates plans and activities with others.
Provides information for the development of departmental budgets.
Monitors expenditures to keep within authorized budget spending appropriations.
Exercises good judgment in the use of and/or management of facilities, equipment and supplies.
Attends assigned meetings as requested.
Is punctual to assigned meetings.
Works well with peers, classified staff and administration.
In general, is easy and cooperative to work with.
Does his/her fair share of departmental duties and responsibilities, including contributing to unit plan and program review processes.
College-wide service

Volunteers to serve on College committees.
When requested serves on College committees and project teams.
Serves as a sponsor to student clubs and organizations.
Participates in faculty/college governance.
Participates on special project teams or ad hoc committees.
Community service (optional)

The College values the contributions made to the local community by the instructional staff, however, such contributions are at the option of the instructor and are not a formal requirement of the position.
